Essential Items Every Car Owner Should Keep in Their Vehicle

I will never forget that feeling of having a flat tire.  I remember being on vacation with my parents, and we had a nail in one of the tires.  The worst part is we had to call around to find out what company could service us because we failed to realize that not every car company carries the tire needed for your vehicle.

The closest one was an hour away.  But the moment we got there, the company had to check if they had that tire in stock.

An hour later they told us they did not.  Additionally, it won’t arrive until a few days later, and they are closed on the weekend.  The worst part was we were leaving that Sunday.

So the company said they’ll go ahead and process everything for the tire and will call if the tire comes in before the weekend.

Luckily, the company received the tire before the weekend had come. It’s because of this experience that I realized the importance of keeping essential items for the vehicle that make the process a lot smoother.

Here are my top recommendations to feel that much safer on the road.

Portable Air Pump (Tire Inflator)

A portable air pump is a valuable tool to have stashed in your car. The last thing you want to do is get stuck on the side of the road.  Having this device can improve fuel efficiency, save you time in emergency situations, prevent underinflated tires, and more.

A compact air pump can run on rechargeable batteries, or it can go into your 12V outlet.  Select one that can help you even on the go.

Jumper Cables or Jump Starter

There’s nothing worse than starting your engine and then moments later when you get onto the highway and your car stops.  Do not allow yourself to get stranded.

Pop your vehicle’s trunk and grab your jumper cable.

Always have a jumper cable in your vehicle.

You won’t have to wait for roadside assistance, selecting a portable jump starter won’t require you to wait for another vehicle to pull over, and more.

Tire Pressure Gauge

A tire pressure gauge can give you peace of mind.  You’ll be able to make sure your tires have enough air, which allows you to feel safe, and it doesn’t cost a lot for you to get one.

Drive safe and be safe no matter the destination.

Spare Tire, Jack, and Lug Wrench

Oftentimes cars come with a donut tire. But if you don’t have the tools, you’ll just be a sitting duck on the side of the road waiting for someone to change it.

Have that lug wrench and jack on standby when taking long road trips, being stranded in unfamiliar locations, and will be able to replace the flat tire right away.

Emergency Roadside Kit

There are a lot of items you can put into your emergency roadside kit. You can put some gloves, flares or triangles that warn drivers, and basic tools.

Being visible is essential.

Flashlight (Preferably LED)

One of the tools you’ll want to have is an LED flashlight instead of a regular one because it lasts longer, is brighter, and doesn’t use a lot of power.

The best part is you can use it for other things besides car troubles.

Its brightness can allow you to see what’s going on, especially at night.

First Aid Kit

You can never go wrong when you have a first aid kit on hand.  A first aid kit should include the essentials like bandages, gauze, and antiseptic wipes. It can come in handy for those road trips.

Windshield Washer Fluid

Being able to have clear visibility of the road can make driving a lot easier when it rains, snows, or changes seasons.  Additionally, it does help prevent debris and dirt from building up and can last a long time.

Phone Charger or Power Bank

A dead phone is no good.  It’s the worst feeling because you don’t have anyone to reach out to for assistance.  Make sure you have your car phone charger or a power bank.

Also, don’t forget to have those contacts saved on your phone or written out just in case.  For instance, if you have car insurance, your coverage may include roadside assistance.

Blanket, Water, and Non-Perishable Snacks

If you are waiting for help and are in an area where the weather is bad, bring the essential items that can hold you over.

For instance, water, snacks, and a blanket.

Final Thoughts

There are many things you can have in your vehicle just in case of emergencies. You don’t need to be a mechanic to have the essential tools.  Your safety is key when driving.

Check what you have already and what you don’t have and get it.

Stay safe and be prepared on the road.
